FREE Sew Plush Valentine Heart Box Tutorial for Bernina

I'm not sure how it's February already, but I have a super sweet and FREE project for you to make. I designed this Sew Plush Valentine Heart Box for the Bernina We All Sew website, just in time to fill it with all kinds of lovely goodies before Valentine's Day.

My Crafty Valentines

After a few months of pure stress, illnesses and so much other stuff, I decided to have some fun. Plain and simple fun, in the studio for a whole week. Now that it has passed, it doesn't sound like much, but it was exactly what I needed to do. I just may have to do it again, and next time I'll lengthen it to a whole month - who's going to join me?

For a few days, I worked on making some crafty Valentines, for all those crafty people in our lives. It all started with the Clover Wonder clips. I had this little note on repeat in my brain "you are so wonderful" and thought it would be fun to send some wonder clips with the note. Then the spark flew and ignited all these other crafty product ideas for Valentines. I just couldn't resist.

To print out these crafty valentine tags, click on the picture above (print on paper or card stock). They are 4" x 2" and will fit across a 4" candy bag. If you are making baggies, and want to use the tag as a tab top, print the tags on regular paper. Cut a plain white piece of 4" x 4" card stock, fold it in half, and glue the tag on the front side of the tab. When dry, staple it to the top of the bag. If the item is larger, print the tags on card stock so they are durable, punch a hole in the corner or center of the tag, and tie it to the product with a piece of ribbon.

A Little Hot Air....Balloon Valentine Tutorial with Phoomph - No Sew

 

I'm back from CHA and my head is still reeling with tons of ideas. Well, really - when is it not? I got this fun "phoomph" stuff to play with from Coats and Clark and knew exactly what I wanted to do with it first.

If you still need an idea for a valentine or two...take their breathe away with these cute, no sew Hot Air Balloons! You can make the simple version (great for kids) or if you get carried away, you can make the 3D version. Either way, they will both be cute and the talk of the town!

Here's what you'll need:

I prefer to use the stiff Phoomph material for this project, and used my Westcott No-Stick Titanium scissors!

You'll need to print this out. I preferred to use card stock so the little banners are sturdy, but it's up to you.

Phoomph comes in white, black, and many different colors and soft or stiff. I have used the stiff for stability, and used pink for these so you can clearly see everything on the white background. Fold over the paper liner on your first large hot air balloon piece. Place half of the fabric and fold the other half on top of itself.  

 

Take a half piece of the large hot air balloon, and lay that on top of the back of the first fabric piece. Take off the paper liner from that half, and lay the next fabric piece on top. Repeat this step with another half piece of the Large hot air balloon piece, so there are 2 halves. You can use a whole piece, but the phoomph doesn't keep a fold or crease easily because it's stiff. So cutting it in half, helps do what it needs to do.

 

 

After you place the second half, the last piece of fabric will cover the second half and the other half of the very first piece. So place the fabric on the first whole piece, and connect it to the half piece. Flip the whole thing over, place 2 knotted threads down the center of the hot air balloon, and begin the whole process again. (fold the threads in half, so you have 4 pieces at the end to attach to each corner of the basket)

To make the basket, cut out the inside piece first (with phoomph and fabric already attached on one side is easiest). Flip the basket piece over and take off all of the paper liner except one side so it doesn't stick to the fabric in this step. Place the square onto the center of the basket.

Attach each thread end to the outer sides of the basket (evenly so the basket isn't crooked), and then hold the sides up and wrap the fabric around the outside of the basket until they meet in the back. This will hold the sides together. Attach a message banner to one of the threads the same way as done above.

Giddy Up Friday: Be my Valentine....

Last year I helped to remake these "fortunes" for my daughter's school. They were originally used for their Field Day - as the "just before summer - here's your fortune - token gift with a real cookie" - SO CUTE!  I only remade them because they were a copy from a copy from a copy...and I also added more.

But then I decided to make them last year while I was volunteering for their Valentine Celebration into Valentine Fortunes and make felt Fortune Cookies...when my daughter wakes up in the morning - I'm going to hope that she will want to make a whole slew of these for the kids in her class instead of getting the Disney kind of store bought ones....If she doesn't - at least I can hope someone else's kids will prefer to make some of these for their school friends...Handmade my child - handmade makes all the difference...maybe if I let her pick out the fabric? (I convinced her...it worked - we bought the fabric today and will make them tomorrow!)

Needs:
Pink Felt by the Bolt. (Depends on how many you are making!) Or Red for the boys...
5" Circle Pattern (find a bowl approx 5" and trace onto cardboard)
Self-Adhesive Velcro Circles cut into half circle (save money!)
(don't forget your coupons! Signup at Joann's or ACMoore's website for an email and save a fortune - no pun intended!)

How to:
1. Cut all your fabric with a rotary cutter (easier that way - but not a have to - just cut straight lines!) into 5" squares.
2. Using your Cardboard Circle pattern...cut off the corners and round it out. You can also trace with a pencil if your child is good with scissors...that will be easier for them!
3. Place the fuzzy half moon close to the edge and the rough half moon on the opposite edge.
4. Make them kiss!
5. Place the fortune into the "cookie" - flat up against the flat back of the cookie.
6. Place another fuzzy half moon close to the edge and the rough half moon on the opposite edge.
7. Push in the center of the fortune - and make those two velcro'd edges kiss.

And there you have it. Make a wish - keep your fortune forever...Let your kid color in the pictures - or leave the hearts uncolored for the receiving child to color in. Now's the time to prepare. Don't procrastinate like I do....If I forget to say it...Happy Valentine's Day! : )  -kg
